My Favorite Local Restaurants and Coffee Shops in St. John, USVI`

June 12, 2025

Underappreciated for its cuisine day in and day out, St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is more than turquoise waters,  hiking trails, and rums of all stripes. Whether you’re enjoying just-hooked seafood, sipping coffee inspired by the islands or diving into Caribbean fusion, the local joints here have something to please anyone. Here are some of my favorite restaurants and coffee shops that get closest to the spirit of St. John.

Morgan’s Mango

Nestled near Cruz Bay, Morgan’s Mango is a longtime favorite that brings the vibrant flavors of the Caribbean to your plate. With a tropical, open-air setting, this restaurant is known for its fusion of Latin and Caribbean cuisine—highlighting dishes like lobster tail, coconut curry mahi mahi, and flavorful jerk entrees. Their rum bar and creative cocktails perfectly complement the island vibe. Don’t miss their Lobster Nights on Tuesdays and Saturdays, a local tradition.

The Terrace

For an upscale yet relaxed dining experience, The Terrace offers refined French-inspired cuisine with a focus on fresh seafood and premium ingredients. Located near the Cruz Bay ferry dock, this elegant spot is ideal for a romantic dinner or a sunset toast. Signature dishes like seared scallops, duck breast, and Caribbean lobster are elevated by a carefully curated wine list and waterfront views.

The Tap Room

A haven for craft beer lovers, The Tap Room is the flagship bar of St. John Brewers, located in the heart of Mongoose Junction. The vibe is casual and friendly, with house-brewed favorites like Island Summer Ale and Tropical Mango Pale Ale on tap. Pair your beer with pub-style eats like burgers, nachos, pizzas, and wings—and don’t forget to grab some merchandise or take-home brews from the attached shop.

1864

A chic, modern restaurant with historic roots and brings a contemporary twist to classic island dining. The interior is sleek, with subtle nods to colonial architecture. Their menu changes seasonally but consistently feature locally sourced seafood, prime steaks, fresh pasta, and craft cocktails. It’s ideal for date night or a refined group dinner.

Banana Deck

Casual, lively, and loved by locals and tourists alike, Banana Deck is a breezy open-air restaurant overlooking Cruz Bay. The place is known for its steak and seafood dishes, oversized drinks (try the signature Painkiller!), and laid-back island vibes. Whether you’re here for a hearty brunch, happy hour, or a relaxed dinner, the friendly staff and scenic views keep guests coming back.

Paulie’s

A hidden gem in Cruz Bay, Paulie’s is a deli-style eatery that offers made-to-order sandwiches. Perfect for a quick bite before hitting the beach or ferry, they serve some of the best grab-and-go meals on the island. Meats are house roasted and the bread is homemade.

Final Thoughts

St. John may be a small island, but it has no shortage of flavor — or character — in its dining options. Whether it’s relaxed beachfront eats or dinners under the stars, every meal here is another chapter in your island tale. Whether you’re a foodie, coffee lover, or just enjoy finding a local favorite, these spots will have your heart — and your tastebuds.
